Drinking Raw Milk is a Bad Idea
Consuming Raw Milk is a bad idea for many reasons. With volumes of data reporting on the negative and dangerous effects of raw milk, some people continue to drink unpasteurized milk. This might be because people incorrectly believe that raw milk has a greater nutritional value and is as safe as pasteurized milk. What is Raw Milk? Well, according to the Food and Drug Administration (www.fda.gov/foodresources), milk from “cows, sheep and goats that has not been pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria, is unpasteurized or raw milk.
Raw Milk can harbor dangerous microorganisms posing a serious threat to everyone who drinks it”, causing serious problems and in some cases even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), …“between 1993 – 2006 more than 1500 people in the United States became sick from drinking unpasteurized milk.” In addition, unpasteurized milk is 150 times more likely to cause food borne illness. What is Pasteurized Milk? In 1864 Luis Pasteur developed a technique for pasteurization.
Pasteurizing is a process used to kill harmful bacteria by heating milk at high temperatures to kill harmful organisms responsible for diseases like, listeriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diptheria, and brucellosis. Some people will continue to believe that pasteurization harms milk and that drinking raw milk is safer. Pasteurization has worked for over 120 years providing safe and nutrient-rich dairy products. With this in mind------why would we drink anything else?
