Fans who viewed the original 3 Star Wars films as they came out had tremendous expectations for the Prequel trilogy. The amount of hype leading up to the release of The Phantom Menace created expectations that no film could live up to. Despite that, the films were all popular, and created a new generation of Star Wars fans.

Fans of the original trilogy were upset for a variety of reasons after the release of the prequel trilogy. Some fans were upset over certain characters like Jar-Jar Binks, others objected the attempt to jam a political storyline into a film series that drew inspiration from the light film serial adventures of the 1930’s and 1940’s such as Flash Gordon. The end result was many original trilogy fans were ready to write off Star Wars and George Lucas after what was widely viewed as an unsuccessful attempt to explain the origin of Darth Vader.

Hope springs eternal however, and especially so with a film property still so well liked, and profitable, as Star Wars. With the sale of the Star Wars franchise to Disney, it became time for another new generation of fans to have their own chance to experience Star Wars. Any discussion of the now epic arc of the Star Wars franchise has to acknowledge the passage of time between the release of the different trilogies of films. It was 15 years between the original trilogy (1984) and the start of the prequels (1999). It has been almost 15 years since the last of the prequel trilogy and this year will see the release of a new Star Wars film, set after the ending of Return of the Jedi.

Now that George Lucas is no longer writing or directing the Star Wars films, fans who were upset by the prequels should approach the new Star Wars films with an open mind. The director of the first of the new Star Wars films, JJ Abrams, has a history of directing successful films including a reboot of the Star Trek franchise. Between the desires of Disney to capitalize on the proven profit machine of Star Wars, the return of the original trilogy cast of characters, and a new director, fans of all ages should find expect a well polished film that will contain a nod to the past and also a look to the future of new stories waiting to be told in the Star Wars universe.
